Bone and Health with Robotic Exoskeleton, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital
To evaluate the effects of robotic exoskeletons on the bone and general health of those with an SCI.

  • Who can participate?
    • Ages 20-40
    • Post injury 3 years
    • T3-T12 injury level, complete
    • Ability to complete sit to sit transfers
    • Weight less than 220 lbs. and height between 5’2” and 6’2”

Brain Blood Flow Study, Spaulding Hospital Cambridge
To determine how spinal cord injury impacts blood flow to the brain.

    • Ages 21-55

Cardiovascular Risk Assessment Study, Spaulding Hospital Cambridge
To determine how spinal cord injury affects health with respect to risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

  • Who can participate?
    • Post injury 3+ months
    • Ages 18-40
    • C5-T12 injury level
  • Time commitment: 2 visits, SRH Cambridge, 1 visit SRH Charlestown over 1-2 weeks

Virtual Rehab Coach, New England Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center
To test a new, virtual on screen, human like coach that people with an SCI can use in their homes to help manage skin care and other health concerns.

  • Who can participate?
    • Injured within the last 6 months – 12 years
    • Over the age of 18
    • Speak conversational English
  • Time commitment: 5-10 hours a day over 2 months

Core Exercise Study, Spaulding Hospital Cambridge
To evaluate if a core exercise routine can affect strength, balance and independence with daily activities.

  • Who can participate?
    • Post injury 2 years or more
    • Ages 18 or older
    • Full arm function
  • Time commitment: 3 visits/week, 2-4 months, visits last approximately 45 minutes

Glove Grip Study, the Wyss Institute, Harvard
To evaluate the use of a soft wearable device to assist with range of motion and function for those with limited use of one or both hands.

  • Who can participate?
    • Ages 18-70
    • SCI resulting in upper extremity impairment affecting strength or range of motion on one or both sides
    • Comfort with being photographed and/or videotaped
  • Time commitment: one session for up to 3 hours. Can do multiple sessions

Neuropathic Pain and SCI, Mass. General Hospital PAIN Group
To evaluate those with an SCI and neuropathic pain compared to those with an SCI and no pain.

  • Who can participate?
    • Post injury 3 months or more
    • Age 18-70
    • C5 or lower injury level
    • Non-smoker, no MRI incompatible implants, no use of anticoagulants
  • Time commitment: One 1-2 hour session, one session may be up 6 hours

Rowing Exercise Study (Phase I: Acute), Spaulding Hospital Cambridge
To determine if electronically stimulated rowing can improve heart function compared to rowing without stimulation.

    • Some arm strength
  • Time commitment: 6-8 months, 3 visits/week, visits last approximately 1 hour

To assist in the training of clinicians in the assessment of those with a cervical SCI.

  • Who can participate?
    • Post injury 4 months or more
    • C2-C8 complete or incomplete injury level
    • Some upper limb function
  • Time commitment: 3 hours
